Abstract

This presentation centers on a longitudinal research project aimed at exploring and utilizing the capabilities of generative Al, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), to support second language (L2) learning, teaching, and research. Building on previous research on Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and dialogue-based systems, a LLM-based conversational Al system has been developed to guide language learners through implicitly constrained, text-based and spoken conversation practices and provide different types of personalized feedback aligned with established proficiency level guidelines. The presenter will share findings from earlier stages that have informed refinements to the feedback mechanism and improvements to the overall learner experience, with implications for designing Al-supported language learning both in and beyond the classroom. The presentation will also highlight the work in progress at the current stage of the project, which examines the effect of Al-assisted repeated practice on proficiency growth and the nature of learner-Al interaction, particularly focusing on learner strategies in self-regulated learning contexts.

Speaker

Naiyi Xie Fincham (Ph.D., Michigan State University) currently serves as a Specialist Faculty in Learning Design at the Center for Language & Technology (CLT) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
Her work lies at the intersection of second language pedagogy, computer-assisted language learning, and learner agency. In addition to designing and offering professional learning programs for world language faculty, her recent projects focus on leveraging generative Al to foster second language speaking skill development and on creating immersive language learning experiences in mixed real-life, multimodal environments. Dr. Fincham also serves as Associate Director of the National Foreign Language Resource Center (NFLRC), where she leads initiatives in online language pedagogy, Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL), and professional development for teachers of less commonly taught languages (LCTLs).
